Most film fans know that January typically is a slow month for films, and often one that studios will dump certain films that they do not think will perform well at other points of the year. Bad Boys for Life feels like both a natural extension of the previous two movie styles as well as its own unique entry. The duo were also fans of the franchise's previous two entries and brought that enthusiasm into the movie breathing fresh new energy into the movie. The directing duo had already defined for themselves their own style that blended well with what Michael Bay established but also did not feel like the directors were just mimicking what came before. By this point, Arbi and Fallah had made a name for themselves in crime films Black and Gangsta. Originally Joe Carnahan was set to direct Bad Boys for Life, but he departed the project in 2017, and then in 2018 Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signed on to direct.

The idea of seeing Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return in a Bad Boys movie likely reminded audiences of a simpler time, and the chance to see old fan favorites again made it a must-see. A similar phenomenon happened with Tom Cruise's returning for Top Gun: Maverick and both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. That amount of time had the opportunity to create almost two whole decades of nostalgia for audiences to build up. Like many long-awaited sequels with returning cast members, Bad Boys for Life puts an emphasis on the lead characters getting older and interacting with a younger set of characters. That is a massive wait between sequels, and almost comparable to the wait between Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. By the time Bad Boys for Life hit theaters in 2020, it had been 17 years since the release of Bad Boys II and 25 years since Bad Boys was released in theaters.
